Recent discussions have centered on whether to liberalize gun laws to improve personal security amidst rising violence, though such changes could exacerbate security issues
Role of Hospitals in Treating Gun Victims
Hospitals in Nigeria play a crucial role in treating gunshot victims under the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act, 2017. This law mandates that all hospitals, public or private, must provide immediate treatment to gunshot victims without requiring police clearance or an initial monetary deposit. The Act also requires hospitals to report gunshot cases to the police within two hours of treatment commencement and prohibits any form of inhumane treatment towards victims. Despite this, compliance issues persist, with some hospitals still refusing to comply or treat victims on time.
Community Involvement in Gun Control
Community involvement in gun control measures is multifaceted, focusing on prevention and intervention strategies. Effective policing practices, such as hot spots policing and focused deterrence, are vital for reducing gun violence and building trust within communities. Community-led initiatives, including violence interruption programs like Cure Violence, have shown success in reducing homicides and shootings by engaging credible community members to mediate conflicts. Government Should Enhance Border Security
)Governments should enhance border security by deploying advanced scanning technologies to detect illegal firearms. In Nigeria, the National Police should work with the Army to intercept illegal firearms at the border, using enhanced targeting techniques Similarly, Customs should implement X-ray imaging systems at ports of entry to detect weapons and other contraband. These measures aim to curb the smuggling of firearms and improve overall border security.
